Following a family of globetrotting scientists and archeologists who track down mythical beasts and match up well against a nifty arch villain, 'The Secret Saturdays' is another promising original series.

Cable TV Animation: Second Quarter 2008 Ratings

The numbers for the Second Quarter of 2008 with cable television networks that air animation. Breaking off into the spring and summer months, this three-month analysis shows little upheaval with very few surprises. After a previously stable Quarter, Disney Channel begins to slide; and after several months of loss, Cartoon Network gets back up on its feet; and much more. Other notes: viewing stats for online video streaming and a few key Sat. morning performances.

Animation Insider recently had the opportunity speak with media research analyst Duncan Morris, the VP of Research and Market Development for Turner Asia. A veteran of kid's media analysis and lifestyle observation, Morris recently wrapped up Cartoon Network India's New Generations survey, a profile of children in India and their media consumption habits. The New Generations survey provides a comprehensive look at the evolving reach and penetration of Indian kid's media.

CNE Lines Up Softlines: 'Ben 10: Alien Force' & 'Bakugan'

Cartoon Network Enterprises has come to an agreement with a variety of product designers and item manufacturers for the branded promotion of two valued properties. Working to transition currently inked apparel deals from 'Ben 10' on over to the alien force, as well as to establish new lines for 'Bakugan'; CNE has plans to push both properties this fall and winter.

Npower Upgrade for SpongeBob, Dora & Diego

The Nickelodeon and Imation partnership that birthed the Npower line of digital consumer products last year is releasing another line of video editing and sound system branded products. Items bearing the name and likeness of hit Nick shows iCarly and SpongeBob SquarePants are at the top of this list of new items. Of the products: a micro MP3 player.

Historical Fantasy Anime 'Moribito' Premieres on Adult Swim

When a young prince is possessed by a revered spirit, a reliable female warrior is hired to protect him. But with beasts from another realm and the hired hands of his royal father seeking to claim his head, the prince has little choice but to weather the danger he is fated to encounter all too frequently. The Japanese animation 'Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit' lands on Adult Swim this Saturday.

Nerd Corps Animation 'Storm Hawks' on DVD in the UK

From Nerd Corps Entertainment is the action and comedy cartoon series 'Storm Hawks,' which building off of successful North American ventures through programming and home video, is coming to DVD in the UK. Distributed by SPHE, 'Storm Hawks' tracks a group of mismatched teens as they help police a distraught world where villains and monsters are around every corner.

Atlantyca Ent. Appoints Lead Editor for Publications

Italy-based animation production group Atlantyca Entertainment has appointed Pierdomenico Baccalario, an experienced writer and editor of children's publications, to head its new division that sees licensed animation properties make the transition to "light" novels. Baccalario as such soon begins work on the anticipated line of 'Code Lyoko' books.

Children's Animation on DVD (August Highlights)

From the motion-capture guided 'Jane and the Dragon' to Nickelodeon's multi-cultural preschool animation 'Ni Hao, Kai-lan' -- there is a good number of kids cartoons out on DVD this month, many for the first time. Wojtowycz's 'Claude' Illustration Books Aim for Animation

The 'Claude' series of illustration and picture books, which follow a little polar bear and the lessons he learns, growing up in the big city, is in production as a cel-action animated TV series. Currently scheduled to air on Playhouse Disney UK and in other European territories, David Wojtowycz's little character is an interesting investment in preschool animated programming.

Cartoon Network continues to work over summer audiences with double-digit gains over the previous year in key hours of programming. Viewers keep tuning into 'Total Drama Island' and 'The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack' on Thursdays; while elsewhere, weekly Primetime numbers appear to be gaining well over last year also.

Toon Disney Television Evolves: Disney XD

Animation-themed cable network Toon Disney will be getting a serious makeover come February 2009, according to Disney Worldwide, as the channel will undergo a serious branding effort to redefine itself and its audience. Merging original live-action properties and established animation favorites, Disney XD will focus its efforts on tween males, starting next year.

United Airlines Debuts Five New Animation TV Spots

Launched on the premiere night of the 2008 Summer Games, United Airlines has unveiled a new group of animated commercials. Enlisting talented artists and directors from across the globe, with skill in stop-motion, paper puppetry, and computer animation, the minds behind United Airlines' new television spots have raised the bar for the brilliant if not farcically artistic.
