Official E3 '08 Discussion

E3 Media & Business Summit 2008
July 14 - July 17

It's that time of year again, when gamers around the world sit with bated breath to find out what we'll be drooling over for the next six months.

First out of the blocks this year has been Microsoft, whose press conference had a few gems...

Standalone release of Portal with new content on Xbox Live Arcade, for both of you who missed it last time.

Fable 2 dated for October

Oldest News is Gears of War 2 in November

Xbox dashboard overhaul, including the ability to fully copy game discs to the hard drive and play from there (disc needs to be in the drive as copy protection, but all data reads from the HDD), and their somewhat more dubious clone of Miis.

Oh, and one more little bit of news that didn't cause sensitive parts of the internet to explode at all....

Final Fantasy XIII will be a simultaneous Xbox 360 and PS3 release.

Re: E3 2008

I'm not shocked to see that FFXIII will be on the 360, with all the rumors that were floating about last year. (I guess that can be counteracted with the rumors about MGS4 being on the 360.) Looking at it from a marketing standpoint though, this is a smart move by Square-Enix.

I don't know why I always thought that Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant were going to be on the PS3 as well.

Fable 2 looked fairly interesting, and the online co-op feature sounds intriguing, but at the same time, I'm not a supporter for online gameplay. I mean, I think it's an interesting idea to be able to walk up to some random person playing their own story, and the both of you can play co-op.

As I said, I'm not interested in online gaming, so I'm no supporter of Xbox Live Arcade, or the new Xbox Experience thing.

Gears of War 2 looked pretty good, but I'm having issues with a lot of these FPS lately. I've not played a single game on any of the newer consoles, but lately, it seems that single player games (mainly FPS) are getting shafted for multiplayer support. Now while I don't mind that too much, I do prefer to play games alone. Halo 3 and MGS4 are prime suspects here of what I mean. I hear that both games are relatively short while playing alone (skipping the cutscenes) while most of the amped of fun is in the multiplayer.

As I said, it's not much of a problem because I understand most gamers are into playing games with an extremely large crowd and/or into the whole massive online support. And that's they're target. I also understand that I can always go play a RPG or a game like Ninja Gaiden / Shenmue, but I'd like to play a FPS where the campaign mode takes a little longer than 6-8 hours to complete.

That said though, while I was not blown away by Microsoft, I did think it was fairly decent.

Re: E3 2008

Here are some PlayStation E3 goodies:
A new movie store has been added, that has brand new movies as well as some classics. Some movies are also rentable in HD.
This new movie store also comes with many other things like TV shows including Family Guy and much more.
The thing I found really good about this movie store is that is has an anime section. Animes include: Gunslinger Girl, Astro Boy, Trinity Blood and more (I can't remember all of them). Xam'd is a new anime that is going to only be available on the Playstation Network, it is an exclusive anime for the PS3. Here's a trailer for Xam'd I found floating around:http://youtube.com/watch?v=2mtlZxglCM0

(copy and paste link, it doesn't seem to want to work)

Gaming:
Resistance 2 - They showed a new trailer....

MAG: An online shooter with an unheard of 256 player games. 128 people on a team divided into 8 man squads. Communication is key in this game. There was a trailer shown for it.

There are more, but I am getting sleepy, I will list more games later.

A new PS3 SKU?
Yep, Sony is releasing a new 80gb SKU, no this isn't the one you can get in the MGS4 bundle. This SKU will be exactly like the 40gb with just 40 more gigabytes. Meaning that it will not be backwards compatible with the PS2. The real surprise is that this is going to be the only PS3 model available after current 40gb's and 80gb's are sold out.

Re: Official E3 '08 Discussion

While watching the G4 coverage, I can safely say that E3 '08 is definitely about games, more games, and mostly games. Developers are making crap loads of great looking games these days and you can tell that they are learning to use the power of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I'm even seeing third party Wii games that look very good graphically.

It's so exciting to see so many cool games coming out. It would be even more exciting if I actually owned a new console and was able to get some broadband to play online.

Dammit!

Re: Official E3 '08 Discussion

I'm just wondering how I'm going to afford all of this?

I'm actually glad that Nintendo's press conference consisted of an hour of gloating about how much money they have and no imminent must have titles, and nothing Sony announced bar Resistance 2 is less than a year away.

In the next few months there's already Soul Calibur IV, Too Human, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Fallout 3, The Last Remnant, and Gears of War 2 coming out (and I've probably missed some too)...

The Last Remnant is, Infinite Undiscovery isn't. (Star Ocean 4 is currently Xbox 360 only as well).

I am aware of that now . Thanks for the clarification though.

I'll tell you another game that caught my interest. The new Prince of Persia game. I've only played the Sands of Time and Two Thrones. Both games were pretty decent but I was turned off of the combat. It seemed like the button timing was off, or had a slow response. (perhaps my controller was going out or something.) I liked the platforming in the SoT as well as TT, but at the same time, I didn't care for the switching over between light and dark side. I'm not a fan of draining of life while just walking/standing still trying to observe the area.

In this new PoP though, everything looks really good. From the new cell-shaded look to the platforming and combat. I don't know if the sand bar is still there because I was so fixated on looking at all the platforming. (confirmation?)

I'm torn on if I want to actually buy a PS3 or not. I want to because FFXIII Versus will be on there, and I still want to play MGS4, but at the same time the 360 is the cheaper console, and, well, multiplatform = good.

The new Prince of Persia game looks absolutely stunning and it's probably the one game that has surprised me the most at this year's E3. I'm not the biggest "Prince" fan, but this brand-new game looks very cool. Best of all, it has a completely different Prince and a different story. If I wasn't a fan before, then now could be the time to become one.

I want a PS3 because I love the Blu-ray format and the fact that I'm still a believer in Sony. Sure, the 360 is doing better than the PS3 outside Japan, but the only things I've ever used having to do with Microsoft are computer products. I've never owned an Xbox, but I own both the PS1 and PS2. I might want a to buy the 360 eventually, but I think I want a PS3 first.

*sigh* I remember the simple times back when there were only two main companies (Nintendo & Sega) and both of their consoles were under $200. Those were the days.

Re: Official E3 '08 Discussion

I have all three current consoles, but it's the 360 that gets played all the time. It's the best designed feature package I've ever seen in a console, and the PS3 is only just now catching up with it.

Re: Official E3 '08 Discussion

Usually there not that many games I really keep an eye out for during the E3, but this year there are a few exceptions.

Dead Space - Normally I don't care much for survival horror games but this one tries at a different angle as you situated all alone on a drifting spacecraft, well not entirely alone of course. The use of anti gravity and the claustrophobic atmosphere look incredible, plus the packing story make it probably one of the most tense games I have ever seen and not something you want to play with the lights out.

Dawn of War 2 - Warhammer 40K with next gen graphics? Sign me up anyday for one of the best RTS games out there.

Call of Duty: World at War- Have to say that I was hoping the next COD was going to remain in the modern warfare theater but this looks impressive. Main interest is that close combat is going to play a much bigger role than in any other of previous games, plus this might be the darkest installment in the series yet.

It's going to be a expensive year once again...

Dead Space looks interesting, though you can see from the trailer that the tagline should be "We like System Shock. A lot."

And yeah, DoW2 looks ace. And that tease at the end of the trailer better damn well by Tyranids.
