Official Save the DC Animated Universe Campaign!

Hello. Now that JLU has ended Warner Bros Animation has announced that they are going to do a series of Direct to DVD animated movies based on comic book adaptations and geared towards comic book fans. Needless to say this is VERY good news for comic book fans. Not so much for the fans of the DC Animated Universe that was started in 1992 with Batman: The Animated series and ended with Justice League Unlimited earlier this year.

I have a confession to make. I never really got into the comic books. Most of them were overly complicated for me to just dip into without knowing 60 years worth of backstory about DC Comics. The reason I loved the DCAU was because it was kid-friendly and easy to understand. Because of it I had grown to love the characters of Batman, Superman and the others as much as if I had been reading the comic books for years. A new fan could dip in and pretty much enjoy all of the shows without being lost. Gearing new movies toward comic book fans is nice for the fans of the comics but for fans of the animated universe it means that we won't be seeing any more of these characters in the styles and storylines we prefer.

The good thing about the new project is that DC Comics is asking fans what new stories they would like to see adapted. I see absolutely no reason why DCAU fans can't write letters and emails for more DCAU stuff to go alongside the stuff for the comic book fans.

This campaign will have four stages. The first two stages will involve sending letters and emails to DC Comics. Here is DC Comics address.

DC Comics
1700 Broadway, 7th Fl.
New York, NY 10019-5905

Here is their email address:

http://www.dccomics.com/about/?action=contact

I think snail mail might be more effective but there is absolutely no reason not to do both. If you want to see more projects for the DCAU like the aborted "World's Collide" DTV or a DTV dealing with the "Near-Apocalypse of '09" or the Justice League Beyond, let them know that. If we have enough requests for DCAU stuff we may get the things we want.

The second and third part of the campaign is going to ape the Gargoyles campaign. We are going to encourage people to write reviews on www.amazon.com for the new DVD season sets of Justice League Unlimited Season One

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

and Batman Beyond Season Two.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...915046?ie=UTF8

Then we are going to convince everyone to buy the DVDs, preferably the week they are released to show WHV and DC that there is still a huge demand for this universe. If you want more DCAU projects in the future please participate in this campaign in any way you can.

Any other suggestions on what else might be helpful to the campaign would be welcome.

This thread is soley for discussing the campaign and ideas for the campaign. Any discussing about how this campaign is a bad idea or will never work is off-topic. If you feel this way please start a different thread about why it's a waste of time or a bad idea as this thread is solely for the campaign.

I would like to thank Yojimbo, Style 92, 90's Cartoon Man, James , Stewie and Revelator for all of the help and support they have given me in setting up this campaign. It is truly appreciated.

Only three more weeks until the DVDs are released. Here's hoping we pick up a lot of support on Amazon.

Welcome to AI!!

Three weeks, man it felt like yesterday when nothing from the DCAU was on full DVD boxsets. This is so great that WHV is churning them out like clock work but hopefully, they will be convinced to release Static SHock and Zeta Project someday.

I'm glad people have responded.

I think the thing to do is to set up a time for mass letter sending. We should all mail our letters at once and set up the dates to do that. We could also email DC Comics about what kind of DTVs we want to see. I want people to set up a time we can all agree on. What works best for everyone here?

I've been disappointed at the lack of responses too. While it's good that the thread has gotten a lot of views we really needed more people to respond to actually organize our letter writing campaign and send them all at once.

There is GOOD news however. It seems the death of the DCAU may have greatly been exaggerated:

Timm: That may happen anyway, and if it does it won’t be under the same banner as these films. There will still be other DC animated projects coming out, in addition to these films. We’re talking about doing a second Teen Titans movie, Worlds Collide, and possibly more. We’re still figuring it all out.

Will we ever hear Kevin Conroy as Batman again?

Timm – You may. Initially, with these first couple, we’re going in different route, but I can see a time when Kevin might be appropriate for Batman.

Will we see new DC animated series?

Timm – Maybe someday. Right now, we’re too busy with the movies, but maybe someday.
So it seems World's Collide is still on the table and if more DCAU stuff comes it will be under a different banner than the upcoming fanboy geared DTVs which is fine with me. I had been worried before when Timm indicated the DCAU was dead but I guess he changed his mind. I'm pretty happy with this idea myself and I hope these projects come to fruition sooner rather than later.

Re: Official Save the DC Animated Universe Campaign!

Given that the DCAU has been adopted into mainstram DCU continuity as Earth-12, I don't think DCAU stories are going anywhere. I'm sure we will get something DCAU-themed in the future, but I doubt if it will be Worlds Colide, as it would be coming out at least 2 or 3 years after the demise of the show (which is an awful long time).

On the other hand, Mystery of the Batwoman (which was a good movie, I don't care WHAT the haters say) came out 4 years after B:TAS/TNBA ended. Also, with B:TAS and S:TAS being run on Jetix, posted free on AOL video and JLU reruns in the future, the DCAU might actually be getting more viewers posthumosly than it did during its run.

All things considered, I'm pretty optimistic about the future of the DCAU.

'B:TAS' and 'S:TAS' is being aired on Jetix? Awesomeness! *kicks self for blocking Jetix. Don't ask why*

And the DCAU is considered Earth-12? Got it. However, I'm not impressed with some of the covers of 'Justice League Unlimited' (though I must remember the old saying about judging a book by its cover).

Any which way, hooray that the DCAU is still alive.

One final thing: I'm with you, Wolf Boy, about 'Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman'. I only wish I hadn't checked out the special features before watching the movie.

The JLU comic is not really in continuity. Maybe now that the show is over it will be, but it doesn't fit with the shows much. Chances are, "Earth 12" only refers to the animated episode continuity.

I know! I did the same thing! Usually special features are spoiler-free.

Re: Official Save the DC Animated Universe Campaign!

I heard they might produce the formerly shelved "Worlds Collide" project, but I don't know if it will be in the DCAU continuity.

DCAU was great, and it had some stories that were superior or at least comparable to some of the best graphic novels.

Our best bet now is to let WHV know that we are interested in World's Collide happening whenever they do a poll or ask at a convention what stories we'd like to see next. I think it's going to happen but we all need to make sure that the producers know how much we want it to.

I've been a fan of the DCAU for awhile now and love it more and more as I re-watch and research it more and more. I SOOOO hope they do more, even if it's just direct to video movies.
