Ed, Edd, n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw is another great sugar-inspired adventure. Whether you're a long-time fan of the show, or if you've been only slightly interested in Ed, Edd n Eddy over the years, or if you are a casual animation fan looking to find something interesting to watch this fall, this is a good TV special to catch.
Each character of the cul-de-sac makes an appearance, no matter how transient, and each of the Eds offer their classic, idiosyncratic personalities to the wonders of the Halloween festivities.
To be honest, I was kind of expecting this television special would surround the guys trying to throw some sort of Halloween party, with the party going horribly wrong in a way that would normally be described as "Ed putting things in chaos and messing things up." But, then again, going against the cliché has always been a strongpoint to Ed, Edd n Eddy. Ed, Edd, n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw serves as a great primer to what I hope will be the (very soon) new season of Ed, Edd n Eddy some time after.
In any case, the physical humor is just as great as ever in this "holiday" special. For example, Ed pulls a t-bone steak out of his pants, the Eds use a little red wagon as their "chariot" in order to escape a good array of demons and monsters, and the best concept as I previously mentioned: Ed uses a spatula as a multi-purpose weapon. If you can imagine any prehistorically rendered weapon or object, then you can imagine in what ways Ed uses his spatula.
Additionally, it's more noticeable here in the specials than in seasons that are more recent; the animation is very smooth. The squiggles and intentional line inconsistencies that were a hallmark to the surreal production design and artwork of episodes past are all pretty much gone in favor of more fluid and succinct animation. To be even more specific, the line-art for this animated television series has come a long way in six years. The style of Ed, Edd n Eddy remains playful and whimsical, it hasn't changed much over the years but has still managed to evolve into something very well defined.
Ed, Edd, n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw delivers the laughs in a way that only Ed, Edd n Eddy can. I absolutely loved the Valentine's Day and Christmas specials that have aired in past months, and this Halloween special only adds to the wonderfully strange list of adventures Ed, Edd and Eddy have been through over the last few years. Similar to the Valentine's Day special, Ed, Edd, n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw stems primarily from the characters' disillusionment with one another (or with their circumstance). And so, even though the special itself is new, it will feel relatively familiar when you see it.
Antonucci and his crew of writers, producers, and animators deliver again. While Ed is Lothar the Slayer of the Undead, Double-D is dressed as the plague, and Eddy as a dead individual, you can only imagine the comedy that ensues once you find out what the other kids are dressed as; Sarah: princess, Jimmy: insect/bug, Johnny 2x4: mutant spider, and Nazz: medusa. (The Kanker Sisters hold a cookout, Kevin goes around throwing eggs at people, and Rolf performs some strange truffle ritual in the moonlight.) Ed, Edd, n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw, although only a half-hour in length, is still a very good watch, and animation fans looking for something new but still very familiar should certainly make time to see its television premiere.
Plus, when you have a television special where a character like Nazz is tempting an innocent guy like Double-D by saying: "Want a handful of my sugar-coated bon bons?" -- how can you not watch it?
