Know the Work

Whether you are new to the realm of comics, familiar with the extensive industry, or are simply looking for a publication that can condense all of the necessary functions of the comics industry into one work, then the Allworth Press publication The Education of a Comics Artist is worth a good look. As edited by Michael Dooley and Steven Heller, The Education of a Comics Artist, is the ultimate publication and source for information, history, and editorial content regarding the ever changing but still dramatically classic comics field.

Everything from essays and interviews regarding the wonderfully diverse medium of comic strip work, to in-depth feature articles on the art of comics itself, The Education of a Comics Artist is a one-of-a-kind publication. The book also includes histories of the artistic and business aspects of comics art as well. Chapters cover all of the major genres--editorial cartoons, comic strips, superhero sagas, and alternative comics--and in doing so brings together in one well-organized anthology an outstandingly sourced pool of information.

Readers will find articles on the content of comics, such as character intrigue, plot exposition, and the sustaining of any one or two themes, as well as find articles on the design and appearance of the medium, such as layout and illustration ethics. Comics art has come a very long way, and as many may argue, still has a long way to go; and as such, interested readers will find this book from Allworth Press as a good checkpoint on all things comics.

The editors of The Education of a Comics Artist, Michael Dooley and Steven Heller, intend for the book to inspire ways to teach, think, and talk about comics. "Teaching comics is, in large part, about planting seeds of knowledge and experience," they observe. This volume will introduce the neophyte, as well as expand the horizons of the seasoned pro. Other topics include comics as a means of personal expression; the role of comic art in related fields such as animation, design and illustration; lesson plans by top teachers; and essays on how to thrive and grow as a comics artist, even as the medium itself continues to evolve.

The Education of a Comics Artist includes articles, spotlights, essays, and features from artists and critics from multiple backgrounds; from notable comics historian R.C. Harvey to the brilliantly talented artist David Mack, to dozen upon dozens of other, well distinguished, award-winning professionals, educators and critics.

The Education of a Comics Artist can be found in bookstores for $19.95, or can be ordered directly from the publisher by calling 1.800.491.2808, or by going online to www.allworth.com where you will find a full description, a table of contents, and reviews.
