Interview with Sam Register

General Programming

As a series producer and series creator you have a lot of things on your plate. Is there ever a clear indicator of a successful show?
In ratings yeah. If people are watching then it makes it a hit. But obviously not every show that uses the term "hit" is a hit. It really takes a couple of years to really tell if something is a hit. Television; you can have a show that premieres at a medium's number, but over six months to a year will build and build and build, and that's all just television. Animation; is a much longer production process as well, from the drawing board to people's living rooms.

Has there ever been a ["type" of] program where the network feels that a "wait and see" approach is best?

Sure, and sometimes there are shows that do great in ratings… Sometimes when people are more familiar with shows it is then that the product [and its merchandise] sells. Sometimes, you have a great show that doesn't sell a damn thing, and sometimes you have a good show that sells only well.

Do you and your associates always have a vision for CNs original programming?

A lot of what we do in development is thinking of Cartoon Network at 2005 and 2007, so we are often looking to the future of what we are going to do. Many will enter but few will win. We have multiple projects in development but Cartoon Network will only make four to five to six a year. I mean, have over fifty projects in development!

This year has been very interesting regarding the ratings attention Fridays has acquired. Are you happy with how the original programming for the network is currently going?

Yeah, absolutely. It's not in my world, but certainly for Cartoon Network. The very smart for packaging and the hosts, it's smart and it's paid off.

Can you give me some insight into the future of some of your current projects?

There's some talk about more Justice League Unlimited, but we haven't decided that. For The Batman, we are working on a direct-to-video release and we've started on a second season. For The Batman's first season we went back on the old villains, but for the new season we're going to make new ones specific to the series.

Are there any series' that you know for a fact that will have a long life? How about Teen Titans?

There will be more. There's a good, good chance there will be more. I don't make that decision by myself but everyone is pretty happy. "There are more stories to tell" the series creators are telling me...

DC universe projects seem to be doing well, is CN considering future series' with DC characters - possibly continuing collaboration with Warner Brothers Animation as well?

I don't know; between The Batman, Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited, that's a lot… I mean that is a lot of DC stuff.
