Interview with Sam Register

Introduction

Accomplished producer and program developer Sam Register was kind enough to exchange a few words with Animation Insider senior news editor Aaron H. Bynum. Serving currently as a vice president of development for Cartoon Network in Los Angeles; it should be noted that over recent years Mr. Register has become one of the key individuals involved with the sudden growth of original programming on the network.

Joining the ranks of professional animation and effects artist Lyndon Barrois, voice actresses Melissa Fahn and Deborah Sale Butler, independent animator Cilia Sawadogo, and Toonami creative director Sean Akins as those interviewed by Animation Insider, Mr. Register brings much to the table, including years of programming development experience and artistic insight. As a vice president of development, he as shaped Teen Titans and aided in the development of several other great shows including the increasingly popular Justice League Unlimited. His latest creation--the flash animated and J-pop oriented Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi--will debut on Cartoon Network's "Fridays" programming block towards the end of November 2004.

The new animated television series follows the two pop stars; for Ami and Yumi travel the world in their fantastic tour bus equipped with everything any superstar would need, including a frugal tour manager. Together; Ami, the peppy and optimistic one; and Yumi, the tough and hard rocking member of the duo, face exciting adventures and bizarre mishaps while taking the world by storm with their catchy hits and unique style. Always under the watchful eye of their square manager, Kaz, the two girls still manage to have a blast and come out on top. Loosely based on the incredible pop duo known as "Puffy" in Japan, lead vocalists Ami Onuki (30) and Yumi Yoshimura (29), the program also includes a variety of live-action scenes in which the pop/rock stars participate the fun as well.
