France-Australia Animation News: 'Sally Bollywood'

Kid detective Sally Bollywood is on the case. Actually, she's been on the case for several months now, and has managed to gain clientele across multiple viewing territories in Europe and northern Africa since here debut last autumn season. The animated series Sally Bollywood, so named for its adventurous lead character, now finds itself at the center of another European broadcast deal courtesy of animation, documentary, and factual entertainment coalition Zodiak Entertainment.

Zodiak Entertainment continues pursuit of additional TV sales for Sally Bollywood, a humorous 2D series about an Indian girl growing up in a western city with a penchant for being a private eye. Sally is twelve-years-old and aims to follow in her father's footsteps as the best private detective in town (if not the world, according to Sally). Not to say she doesn't have the determination or skill to do so.... Sally is always eager to help friends in need, so long as she and her tech-wiz partner Doowee get paid in sugary sweets by the end of the day.

Sally's high-energy and passion for problem solving lead her to open up her own little business -- Sally Bollywood Investigation (SBI) -- as a sort of sub-department of her father's agency. As the animated series continues, Sally engages neighborhood kids as a "results guaranteed" detective; using all the technological blessings an urban kid detective of the twenty-first century might enlist to get the job done. The animated series' swift-pacing and excitable color scheme brightens more tiresome or typical methods of deduction, with bike chase scenes, lab inventions, and more often than not, a funny and engaging song and dance sequence.

Sally Bollywood (52x13), which premiered on France 3 (France) back in October 2009, has earned new broadcast deals for Cartoon Network/Telecinco (Spain) and Aquarius (Portugal). The animation is currently airing on Disney Channel (Germany) with additional broadcasts scheduled for Super RTL (Germany) next autumn.

The action-comedy cartoon benefits from a polished and integrated soundtrack, and a highly visual story.

Each episode's accessible balance of a western, urban environment with the traditional, colorful mosaic typical of some eastern cultures make for an effective viewing experience. Zodiak Entertainment previously secured deals for Disney Channel (France, Italy), VRT (Belgium), RTBF (Belgium), Atlantic Pictures (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia), and others, with even more sales anticipated for The Netherlands and the Middle East.

Whether someone's homework has gone missing, or if a local kid has an argument in desperate need of an arbitrator, Sally Bollywood is on the case. The concept for the animated series is credited to Pepper Sue and Elastik Jane, produced by Philippe Alessandri and Giorgio Welter, with series direction by Jeremie Hoareau and Alexis Ducord. Production partners include Tele Images Kids/ Marathon Animation (France), Three's A Company (Australia), and FunnyazHell Animation (Australia).
