'Yozakura Quartet' Anime Release News

Nearly three months into the New Year, anime distribution group Section23 Films has already prepped and packaged a wide variety of anime properties -- some more original than others. Next up is Yozakura Quartet, one of the company's first real forays into genre-mixed titles, such as fantasy and slice-of-life. Taking place in a city where human and demon-folk walk the streets with a rustic familiarity that comes from years of coexistence, Yozakura Quartet tracks a foursome of teenagers helming a local policing/authority force.

Some people say there is a tender, almost supernatural balance between humans and demons, which allows everyone to live relatively peacefully.... even though it certainly remains quite obvious there will always be those eager to tip the scales in one direction or the other. Regardless, such a tenuous balance cannot go unregulated, and so enters Akina, a young man whom is a city authority and officer running as director the Hiizumi Life Counseling Office.

Akina works with three girls, each of which bring something interesting to the table.

The other three-quarters of the quartet include Ao, Kotoha, and Hime: Ao is a mind reader and telepath, Kotoha is half-human and a conjurer, and Hime, who has dragon blood running through her veins, is incredibly strong.

These three girls are the driving force of Akina's Office, but are not to be outdone by Akina's own abilities, which include the power to banish spirits from the physical world. As Yozakura Quartet continues, these four are tasked with taking on various tasks around the city, following-up on crimes or challenges too big for all other forms of police.

The Yozakura Quartet anime series hopes to blend elements of the paranormal into a more humanized milieu. In a town where humans were once the dominating race, more and more demon species are cropping up, causing all sorts of unrest. Demons might possess someone, or another might abuse their power.... and if this is the case, Akina and his crew are on the case. Section23 Films will be distributing Yozakura Quartet starting March 2nd, 2010 ($39.98), through a DVD release to include all of the series' twelve episodes.

Based on the manga by Suzuhito Yasuda, currently distributed by Del Rey in the U.S., Yozakura Quartet lays claim to some substantive character dynamics with hopes that a fair bit of demon-on-demon action is just the right spice to keep the story moving along.

The animation's incorporation of demon fighting into the everyday work of four teens is often layered between moments of organic, overlapping dialogue, and a stylish rock soundtrack.
