Beginning his story in an Irish abbey where several kind-hearted monks tend to him, Brendan knows little of the outside world, ravaged by the Vikings (whose presence ominously draws near).
When Brendan is asked by a visiting monk to help fill in some of the blank pages of the Book of Kells, the book of illumination, the boy is overjoyed. However, obstacles are abound.... some feel it is more important to worry about the inevitable attack from the Vikings than to slave over a book of fancy artwork; while there also lies outside of the monastery, a magical forest, where a curious fairy girl whispers thoughts of exploration to the inexperienced young monk. Altogether, The Secret of Kells provides an emotional and, compelling story with groundbreaking visuals.
GKIDS has currently scheduled the animation for a wide theatrical release on March 12, 2010. There is no word yet on a home video release. The Secret of Kells will have its Academy Award-qualifying L.A. run in early December, at the AMC Burbank 8 theater. The film was produced by Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Les Armateurs (France) and Vivifilm (Belgium), with additional work performed by studios in Hungary and Brazil. The Secret of Kells earned its U.S. premiere earlier this year through the NY Int'l Children's Film Fest.
"The Secret of Kells is a visually unique and exciting fantasy adventure that reinvigorates 2D animation as both a peerless art form and viable commercial medium," Eric Beckman, President of GKIDS Inc. stated. "It is an absolutely stunning film with universal appeal for adults, families, animation fans, and anyone who loves beautiful, meaningful storytelling."
