New Anime from Sentai Filmworks

Something happened on Kamioki Island, but Mari can't recall exactly what it was. A teenaged girl whose memory seems to have vanished along with the mysterious event that claimed the lives of so many others on that island, Mari Wakatake is an otherwise simple girl living with her grandmother. In the sci-fi anime drama Blue Drop, Mari is unwittingly thrust into a quest of abrupt maturity, bit by bit learning more about the strange event that changed her life. Distributed by Section23 Films, Blue Drop will be one of the first new Japanese animated programs to hit stateside after the reorganization of the licensing company formerly known as ADV Films.

A little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of teen drama, and a little bit of shoujo-ai, Blue Drop's story begins some four or five years ago, when all of the inhabitants of Mari's island are wiped away one night. Everyone disappears; everyone except Mari, whom it turns out has lost her memory.

The cause of the disappearances is never identified.

An introverted girl who has lost all of her friends, family, and memories, Mari is now in the care of her affectionate grandmother. But things are about to shift for Mari; she's enrolling in the all-girl's school Kaihou Academy, and is about to come face-to-face with an integral clue to that unknown nightmare from five years ago.

As Blue Drop continues, Mari meets her new roommate.... a peculiar girl with long, dark hair, whom upon their first meeting, suddenly feels a connection with the shy girl and her dramatic past. For all of the ruckus and clutter of being thrown into this mess of a social life, Mari can sense it, her new roommate Hagino knows something, but what is it? Hagino appears to be just another student, but upon closer look, a fragile but curious Mari senses a connection slightly deeper than she had first thought.

Licensed by Sentai Film works and distributed by Section23 Films, re-launched remnants of what was once ADV Films, Blue Drop is a thirteen episode anime series. Available on home video as a complete series DVD Set beginning November 17th, 2009 ($39.98), subtitled only, Blue Drop is a relatively straightforward program hoping to espy its little heroine come out of her shell little by little after meeting another young woman who may just be out of this world. Bonus features for this set release will include original Japanese promotional videos, TV spot, and an art gallery.

Coming to Kaihou Academy is a frustrating experience for Mari Wakatake, but slowly learning to understand what it means to have a friend, who cares for you despite your shortcomings (or lack of memory), is something altogether new.

For Mari, it's a little bit scary not knowing what the past holds; but dipping her toes into he supernatural, after meeting someone new, may just force her to confront how surprising (and terrifying) her future might be.
