Nick Animation on the Horizon

Nickelodeon animation is looking to update and upgrade its offerings in the coming year. Announcing this week a new development slate for the coming year, Nickelodeon is pursuing a swarm of new ideas: an couple of title adaptations, a series spin-off, new projects from established directors, and so on and so forth. Sticking mostly with 2D projects with computer animated programming sprinkled in for good measure, Nickelodeon's new slate of greenlights and developmental items hope to complement previously announced series' currently in production (Kung Fu Panda, Fanboy and Chum Chum).

Coming soon from Nickelodeon will be a spin-off of the CG series Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius… with Planet Sheen, which as inquiring minds will easily decipher, is will be a series centered on Jimmy's sidekick of a buddy, the infrequently bright but ever-imaginative Sheen Estevez. Nickelodeon has ordered twenty-six episodes of Planet Sheen (directed by Sam Levine), which will be produced by O Entertainment for the kid's network. Also on the radar will be the latest from Butch Hartman, whose smart-mouthed characters and long-running subplots are mainstays on Nick. Hartman's latest, T.U.F.F. Puppy, will follow a clumsy dog chosen as the next great super-canine to protect the great Petropolis (partnering of course, with his own league of super pets). Nickelodeon has ordered thirteen episodes of T.U.F.F. Puppy, and will produce the animated television series at heir Burbank studio.

Apart from giving the go-ahead for the two before mentioned titles, Nickelodeon has also ordered pilots of the following animated items: The 2D animated series The Fleeps, created by Tim McKeon (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) and directed by Dave Wasson (Time Squad), follows two naïve musicians, an alien warlord, and his mother on a road trip through space.

You're a Bad man, Mr. Gum, an animated adaptation of Londoner Andy Stanton's award-winning book, from a five-book series, about a grumpy old fellow of the small, strange village whose distaste for anything and everything related to children, pets, and corn on the cob deters everyone but a sprightly little girl named Polly. Stanton writes and executive produces the pilot episode. The third and final pilot announced by Nickelodeon is for Robot & Monster: Best Friends Forever, "a buddy comedy featuring a relentlessly ambitious robot and a pathologically positive monster."

On the two animated programs that Nickelodeon has placed series-orders for -- T.U.F.F. Puppy and Planet Sheen -- the network's series descriptions are as follows:

Created and executive produced by Nickelodeon series writer and director, Butch Hartman, T.U.F.F. Puppy follows the gung-ho, dim-witted dog named Dudley Puppy who is thrust into the role of "hero" when recruited by the super secret crime fighting organization, T.U.F.F. (Turbo Undercover Fighting Force). Aided by his smart and sassy feline partner Kitty Katswell, Dudley makes his way through caper after caper as he protects his hometown of Petropolis against the evil animal organization, D.O.O.M. (Diabolical Order of Mayhem), which will stop at nothing until Petropolis is overthrown. .T.U.F.F. Puppy features a cast that includes Eric Bauza ("White Pantera," El Tigre) as Dudley, Grey DeLisle (Avatar: the Last Airbender, The Mighty B!) as Kitty Katswell, Jeff Bennett ("Peppermint Larry," Marvelous Misadv. Flapjack; "Prowl," Transformers Animated) as Keswick, Daran Norris (The Replacements) as Chief, Matthew Taylor (Open Season) as Snaptrap, and Leslie Carrara-Rudolph (Sesame Street) as Peg Puppy.

Executive produced by Steve Oedekerk, Keith Alcorn, and Jim Hope, Planet Sheen is the intergalactic tale of Sheen Guevera Estevez, the hyperactive, attention span-challenged kid from Nickelodeon's Jimmy Neutron, who, after accidentally "borrowing" a rocket, crash lands on Zeenu. Inhabiting this planet in a world of limited technology, its not-too-bright creatures are ruled by an Emperor fascinated by Sheen.

The story follows Sheen as he deals with Zeenu's bizarre customs and strange-looking creatures including a jealous villain, Dorkus, a 10-foot tall, two-headed princess with a crush on him, and a NASA-trained, talking chimp, Nesmith, who joins Sheen in his ultimate quest to return home.
