March 27th, 2009 1:10 PM by Aaron H. Bynum

CN Upfront 2009 || Overview

Presenting at their annual Upfront press event this year, Cartoon Network has unveiled another ambitious display of animated programming. Eager to build on the well-targeted success of last year's prized announcements (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, The Secret Saturdays), the kid's cable entertainment group is moving forward with its plan for further original, themed programming, which will inevitably include the integration of multi-media and alternative media programming. Of course, Cartoon Network was sure to mention their greenlight for a whole slew of animation as well, some of it familiar, but much of it new as well.

Currently offering its viewership a casual medley original television animation, selectively acquired titles, and various live-action theatrical components, Cartoon Network is serious looking to fine-tune its message in the forthcoming year.

Cartoon Network's 2009-2010 program development strategy includes nearly twenty new ventures: a half-dozen new animated television series,' a new computer animated movie special, and an assortment of scripted live-action options (though not detailed here). According to the entertainment group, this will be their largest development slate in network history.

On-air and online growth has shown Cartoon Network the way, and their path has subsequently led them to renew popular animated items such as the CG space-opera epic Star Wars: The Clone Wars, classic 2D bat-action in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, slapstick favorite The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, and several others.

Additionally, Cartoon Network has given the full go-ahead for some truly intriguing new animated projects as well, such as the Genndy Tartakovsky guided giant-robot epic Sym-Bionic Titan, the long-awaited series-adaptation of Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time with Finn and Jake, and the computer animated movie Firebreather, which is based on the comic books created by Andy Kuhn and Phil Hester. These animated items and more are detailed on the following pages of this AnimationInsider.net feature news article.

"Last year, we outlined a strategy focused on genres of programming," Rob Sorcher, Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network, commented. "Today we revealed how that strategy continues to grow with additional nights of signature programming and expands to include both scripted live-action and alternative content, as well as animation. We're committed to delivering a diverse range of engaging content to our audience.
