Review

Squirrel Boy is quite "squirrely!" When I watch this Cartoon Network original series, it takes me back to the animation style similar to the cartoon Duckman. I was surprised by the new jokes and the voiceovers, along with the details in the drawing. I am most impressed with the credentials of the people who are a part of this new original series.

Created by Everett Peck (whom by the way did have a hand in creating Duckman), Squirrel Boy is a new series featuring a 10 – year – old boy named Andy Johnson, and his best friend and pet squirrel, Rodney J. Squirrel.

Leading one another into all kinds of adventures, Andy and Rodney engage in all kinds of wacky hi-jinks whether its in Andy's backyard or anywhere else in the neighborhood. Andy's dad doesn't necessarily care for his son's new friend and squirrel, and in fact, wouldn't mind seeing him go away.

The voice of Rodney J. Squirrel is done by Richard Horvitz, who voiced "Zim," from Invader Zim, and voiced Billy from the Cartoon Network original series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Other voice credits behind his name includes Ben 10, Rugrats, Kim Possible, Static Shock, and Dave the Barbarian.

Pamela S. Adlon voices Andy Johnson, who voiced Bobby Hill from the hit series King of the Hill and has been acting since she was 12 years old. He made her film debut on Grease 2.

Squirrel Boy is pleasantly new and the dialogue is written in a way that is both smart and creative. The animation style is very easy on the eyes, and the pace or speed of each episode seems to make the program easier to enjoy. There's just something about a boy and his squirrel that makes Squirrel Boy appealing, rather than the already used "a boy and his dog" type of storyline. Granted, a boy and his dog is still good, only now we can finally see what happens when you put a smart and adventurous squirrel next to a 10 – year – old boy!

Squirrel Boy is set to debut on July 14th at 7 p.m. eastern / 6 central on Cartoon Network.
